Our cut to size Douglas Fir timber products (also called sawn to size) are sawn to your chosen measurements and come straight off the saw with no machining performed to the edges, unlike our planed products. This makes cut to size Douglas Fir ideal for you to start working with in order to achieve the finish required for your finished product.
iWood - The UK's premier supplier of Douglas Fir wood
Our cut to size timber is untreated and is most commonly dried in kilns to remove moisture content. The grade that we supply Douglas Fir wood in is Clear and Better which is the top grade for imported Douglas Fir. The timber is a light reddish brown and, in this grade, has a low knot content.
About Our "Clear and Better" Grade
Our Douglas Fir is supplied in a Clear and Better grade, which is the highest grade of imported Douglas Fir available. This grade is sometimes referred to as 85/15 Clear and Better. The result is a premium finish with an attractive grain and excellent strength, stability, and durability properties.
Our 85/15 clear and better Douglas Fir grade is what is used to achieve C24 strength grade in pieces that meet the minimum cross-sectional size of 2500mm². When ordering for C24 strength joists in this product, please enquire to confirm the sizes are suitable. Please note: If you require your order documentation to explicitly state C24 instead of 85/15 Clear and Better, please advise us in the special instructions at checkout.
This is an excellent alternative to using treated/tanalised C24 softwood as the timber is natural and unmodified, ideal for exposed joists - particularly when used internally where kiln dried softwood options are limited for C24 strength.
The overall quality of Douglas Fir wood makes up for the relative difficulty in working and treating it. Compared with European redwood, both the imported and home grown Douglas Fir are roughly 60% stiffer, 40% stronger and 30% stronger in bending.
At iWood Timber Merchants we have built our reputation on supplying the highest quality timber, ensuring you have the greatest percentage of usable Douglas Fir timber from your delivery.
Other Uses of Douglas Fir Timber
- heavy construction
- piling
- house building
- roof trusses
Douglas Fir is resistant to suddenly applied loads which is why it is used so commonly in construction. The timber can also be used for timber framed garden structures such as pergolas, gazebos and garden rooms.
