Articles: What is Timber Cladding?

Cladding Projects Supplied By iWood

Why timber cladding is so popular

Timber is a fantastic material and has always had its place in the building and decorating industry. In recent years popularity has exploded due to its renewability and highly sought after natural aesthetic.

This is especially true when it comes to timber cladding. Timber cladding is a method to clad a building or structure and protect it against the elements. Although, it is more often used to improve the aesthetics of the structure and add a natural and traditional feature which will withstand the test of time.

What makes our cladding different?

Timber cladding when sourced and harvested correctly is a renewable building material and an environmentally friendly product. At iWood we are a PEFC and FSC® approved company which means that the timber we source is part of a chain of custody provided by the PEFC and FSC® which both share a similar goal of good timber harvesting practices and adequate forestry management.

There are all manner of different cladding profiles to choose from all of which have their own pros and cons. You can find a visual representation of all the different profiles we supply here.

What cladding is most popular?

The most common and versatile choice is IWC1 Tongue and Groove V jointed cladding. This profile can be fixed both vertically and horizontally and has a good balance between aesthetic and cost efficiency. IWC1 is available on our website for online checkout in a variety of species. If you're after a timber species that isn't on the Tongue & Groove product page, please contact us and we will provide you with a quotation.

If you’re after the most cost effective cladding, a feather edge profile would be ideal. Available in a variety of softwoods and hardwoods, this profile is supplied with a traditional fresh sawn finish and is designed to be attached horizontally onto your desired structure.

We also offer, shiplap, rainshield and waney edge cladding for those who are after a more unique cladding. Waney edge in particular is popular amongst customers looking for a very rustic and natural look as one edge will follow the natural deviations of the trees wane (bark).

Bespoke cladding profiles

Overall, we have a diverse catalogue as standard with our products but we are no stranger to custom and bespoke profiles. In the past we’ve had a range of enquiries regarding some distinctive designs and as long as they are feasible and we have a drawing to set up the machines to we’ve always found success and received good feedback.
